A number of individuals, businesses and designers in Japan have long drawn inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland stories.
One reason for this might be the popularity of an anime called Fushigi no Kuni no Alice that was shown on Japanese TV from 1983-1984 and the additional anime shows that adapted at least some aspect of the Alice in Wonderland storyline.
Another reason could be that Alice in Wonderland is simply a fun adventurous tale that sparks the imagination & creativity of both children & adults.
So it’s not too surprising to discover that doll companies would draw inspiration from Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland tale.
Fashion Dolls Meet Alice in Wonderland
One doll company that has drawn inspiration for Alice in Wonderland is the Jun Planning/Groove Inc. of the Pullip brand. They seem to love the Wonderland tales more than any other.
This Korean-based doll brand has an entire line based around characters from Wonderland.
They have created nearly 30 dolls centered around Lewis Carroll’s famous stories.
The designers allowed their inspiration & imagination to soar and ultimately created an entire series of Alice themed dolls.
Some of these fashion dolls were very close in appearance as the characters in the original stories.
Take for example, Pullip Fantastic Alice, originally released in 2004. Her attire is very similar to Alice’s traditional outfit: blue knee-length sleeve dress with an apron on the top, white stockings and black ankle-strapped shoes.
Their other Alice themed dolls had a fun & unique twist to the Victorian-style design.
Other Doll Companies Like Wonderland Too!
But Pullip is not the only trendy doll who has drawn inspiration from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Azone International has also gotten in on the fun, with a few of their original & EX-Cute line of dolls.
For example, they created the Aoto Mad Hatter doll. He’s like a combination of the Mad Hatter and the white rabbit into a single character.
Unlike the other brands, though, it’s hard to think of this little fellow as something malicious.
In fact, he has a cute old-fashioned outfit along with a hat which features black rabbit ears that tie together with his cute Steampunk outfit. He’s more adorable than anything else!
Azone applied the same design combination with their Aika Classic Alice Chershire integrating Alice and the Cheshire cat into the adorable Aika doll.
But Azone has also kept things traditional and classic with the release of their Alice Time of Grace 48cm Ellen dolls.
Alice in Wonderland Sparks the Imagination
The tale of Alice in Wonderland is a nonsensical story with mad & zany characters yet it’s playfulness and innocence appeals to both kids and adults.
It has inspired fans, designers, figure & doll companies from all over the world.
These individuals have taken the beloved Lewis Carroll’s stories & created their own version of Wonderland.
