Welcome to the 2nd Hanon Project!
We hope your day is as cool and relaxing as our dolly models look.
This Month’s Sewing Motto:
Progress Over Perfection
Dolly Sewing Crush: Hanon Project #2
We are taking a look at the comfy Embroidered Smock Dress from Doll Sewing Book HANON, the Japanese version with English translations on page 44.
It takes 27 steps to complete this outfit.
The directions for the Embroidered Smock Dress are written in Japanese and English. It also includes images so you can visually see the step by step instructions.

Your Layout For Sewing Success
Steps 1-5 Making a Design On the Sleeves
These steps are all about embroidering the sleeves to create a unique design.
I never embroidered anything, so I skipped this step.
Hopefully when I learn how to embroider, I’ll return to this project and do these steps.
Steps 6-12 Sleeves & Gathers
This area is where you create gathered sleeve hems and attach the sleeves to the front and back bodice pieces.
Steps 13-20 Neckline & Gathers
These steps involve creating a gathered neckline, attaching bias tape to the neckline and finishing the neckline by hand sewing the bias tape to the inside of the bodice.
There are 2 options for the bias tape.
You can buy the bias tape or make your own by cutting the fabric at a 45 degree angle using the bias tape pattern.
We chose to make our bias tape using the pattern and ran into an issue.
Even though we cut the bias tape to size, it wasn’t wide enough to cover the gathered neckline so it made it a challenge to hand sew it into place.
Next time we’ll buy bias tape.
Steps 21-27 Finishing the Embroidered Smock Dress
The final section includes sewing the sleeves and side seams, folding the hem of the dress, sewing the back close and attaching snap fasteners.

Hanon suggest for a natural look to soak the dress in water, wring it out and air dry it.
We gave it a try!
Final Thoughts:
This outfit has us eager for spring.
It was an easy project to do that delivers a dolly sewing victory.
