Updated April 23, 2019: Prototype images of boys wearing a different outfit
September 2018, PetWORKs hosted the PetWORKsの仕事と野望 -All about PetWORKs event.
It was an event to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
Fans who attended got a chance to see prototype of PetWORKs’ 1/6 scale boys.
And from the many retweets and likes on Twitter, fans were very excited about about Eight & Nine.
PetWORKs had hoped to deliver the boys to fans by the Autumn of 2018 but changed the date to Spring of 2019.
But it looks like there’s another date change.
On March 6, 2019, Momoko’s creator, Namie Manabe, shared the following news about the PetWORKs male line:
We’re still looking for concept illustrations for the 1/6 scale boys, so we can’t exactly predict what they’re going to be like.
Management wise, we want any of the doll molds we invest in to sell well, but there is no way to know if they will until we get them out to the market.
Anyway, we’ll put our very best into making attractive products.
For many customers, the world of playing with boy’s dolls is something they don’t have any idea about yet.Namie Manabe - Twitter (English Translation)
Oh, wow.
I know a lot of fans were eagerly awaiting the boys release and now must put their purchase on hold.
Sounds like designing a brand new doll from head to toe is a lot more challenging then most of us realize.
PetWORKs is a small company.
And I can only imagine the investment and worries they’re having to sort through.
They want a successful male line and us collectors, want it to be successful too but this is a whole new area for the company.
There’s no guarantee that either boy will be popular with collectors.
I hope PetWORKs doesn’t get discouraged and bail out of the male line.
But I also understand they have to do what’s best for PetWORKs & the future of the company.
Ugh, this was not the news I wanted to hear for Eight & Nine but at least we have some idea of what’s going on with the two fellows.
Good News: PetWORKs will attend Doll Show 55 Spring Asakusa and Eight & Nine will be on display.

As news about Eight & Nine continue to come in I’ll update this post, so please stay tuned!

Thanks for the update and the extra photos from I Doll 55. Is it just me or is the head a little more yellow than the body in the dressed photos? The nude photo without clothing was fantastic as it showed the boys more clearly. I can see straight away that the necks are quite thick and for me, the head looks slightly small on such a massive neck. In some of the images, particularly when they are turning their heads, it does appear a little as though the head just floats on top of the neck rather have it be seamless, if that makes sense! It’s not as noticeable on the smaller boy but the taller boy, maybe all it needs is a slightly wider jawline to balance out the neck thickness. Or maybe it just looks like that because there is no hair on the head and once the hair goes on, it balances out the neck? Just throwing some thoughts out there.
It isn’t a deal breaker for me though. I’d still get the tall boy. There are ways to handle that in photos. And with clothing on, it’s not as noticeable anyway.
Hi Alasse Carnesir,
I see what you mean about the thickness of the neck compared to the head.
I hope PetWORKs finds that perfect combination for the boys.
Each time they share an image it’s a different prototype with a slightly different expression.
I like the details they’re trying to add to the boys’ body with the little muscles – they’re so cute & funny.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the updated pics of Eight & Nine.

I hope you like the blog! I am in the midst of Season 3 and I think It has improved over the years as I have learned how to improve it. I have been taking a short break to set up my new doll room but hopefully will be posting again soon. Thank you for your interest! ❤️
I would really want to buy these 2, and I understand the delay… I will continue to wait patiently for them… I hope it happens…that they get realized before the end of the year…or early next year…?
Hi Makoto,
You make it sound so easy to be patient.
It’s challenging for me to wait patiently.
But I have no choice.
I’ll use the time to create an Eight & Nine dolly fund. 🙂

I’m disappointed that Eight and Nine are delayed but I think it’s important to get the concept right. In the latest photo, Eight is wearing the school jacket that Nine had on in the last photo. That’s MUCH better as Eight is younger. I would definitely buy him if he came in a school uniform. I write a doll soap opera blog and as I live in the UK, all my younger dolls must have school uniforms and finding them to fit can be very challenging. As for Nine, I like the clothes he’s wearing in the most recent photo. The sad thing about the delay is that in my soap opera, one of my Momoko dolls is Yuki, who has had several relationships go sour. I was thinking she would find true love at last with Nine – but now she has to wait even longer! Poor Yuki! She can’t wait for you forever, Nine!
Hi Wendy,
Ms. Namie said she switched up the outfits for boys for the doll show event.
I too like the mature look for Nine.
Sorry to hear about Yuki. I’ll be rooting for her to find her true love 🙂
I can totally see Nine & her together though. With her looks and his vibe . . . oh, there’s love in the air.
Your soap opera is The West Enders, correct?
How many season/episodes have you done so far?
I’ve added it to my reading list and will start with The West Enders: Episode One.
I did a quick scan and now I’m afraid . . . . I’m afraid I may become addicted to your story.
I have that type of personality and you’ve done a great job in making them so real :O
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us about the Eight and Nine updates.

“We’re still looking for concept illustrations for the six different boys, so we can’t exactly predict what they’re going to be like.”
SIX different boys?
Hi Marna,
It looks like the meaning got last during translation.
Sorry about that.
The line should read: We’re still looking for concept illustrations for the 1/6 scale boys, so we can’t exactly predict what they’re going to be like.
I’ve made the changes to the post.
I hope it makes better sense now 🙂
Thanks,
Tatyana
That’s a long delay. Whilst I understand why they did this, they have to be careful that they don’t lose the interest of fans by continually delaying the products. I know they want it to sell well but by 2020, other dolls may enter the market and provide more of a competition in that area. It’s a fine balance between keeping fans interested and losing their interest because of constant release date changes. And because the world of 1/6 scale dolls is getting more and more attention, right now, the market is good for these dolls. Whether it stays that way or not really depends on the collectors. Will they move on to bigger and better things? Leave doll collecting behind or find other companies that produce male dolls in this scale and are available now?
Time will tell.
Hi Alasse Carnesir,
You bring up a very good point about fans losing interest.
I have a tendency to lose interest when things are delayed or it maybe more like I totally forget about ‘em. Out of sight, out of mind 😉
And you may be onto something about the “1/6 scale dolls is getting more and more attention”
Azone is introducing 2 new EX-Cute boys this year.
More competition.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with me about Eight & Nine’s production update,
Tatyana
To be honest I think these are good news. I really disliked the updated version of NINE so hopefully they will have made him charming again come 2020.
Hi Nadia,
I hope that is the case.
If Eight & Nine turn out amazing, then it would be totally worth the wait but if not . . . ugh I’d be so disappointed.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Eight & Nine’s production updates.
