Dollfie Dream Dolls by Volks: Release List & Collector Guide

Dollfie Dream is a line of highly articulated soft vinyl dolls made by Volks, a Japanese collector doll company.

Each doll is built using soft PVC over a Dollfie Dream Internal Frame skeleton (DDIF), giving the doll a realistic, graceful appearance and the ability to hold a wide range of poses.

Volks produces two types of Dollfie Dream models collaboration models featuring characters from popular anime and game series, and standard models featuring original characters created by Volks themselves.

This combination of licensed characters and unique originals makes Dollfie Dream a favorite among both doll collectors and anime fans.

Dollfie Dream comes in 6 body sizes, each with their own proportions and character:
Chimikko Dollfie Dream (Chimikko DD) — approximately 36.5cm. The smallest DD body, with a cute and youthful appearance.
Mini Dollfie Dream (MDD) & MDD Mochi-Ashi — approximately 43.5cm and 43cm respectively. Small with adorable proportions. The Mochi-Ashi version features rounder thighs and shorter shins
Dollfie Dream Pretty (DDP) — approximately 50cm. Designed with a lovely, feminine look

DDIF stands for Dollfie Dream Internal Frame, the internal skeleton that gave Dollfie Dream bodies their structure and poseability for over a decade.

The frame allows the doll to hold poses while the soft PVC outer body gives her a lifelike, tactile feel.

This combination of an internal frame and soft vinyl is what sets Dollfie Dream apart from both hard-resin BJDs and standard fashion dolls.

After ten years, the DDIF has since been succeeded by the DD-f3 (F-Cube), Volks’ next-generation internal frame introduced in 2023.

The DD-f3 is Volks’ new generation internal frame, introduced in 2023 with the MDD Base Body and now used across all DD body sizes.

The name incorporates three “f”s that reflect its design philosophy: Freedom (unrestricted posing), Fashion (a fusion of sophisticated appearance and articulation), and Future (creative mechanisms moving the line forward).

The “3” in the name is itself a play on words referencing all three concepts together.

The key improvement over the DDIF is the separation of detachable parts from movable parts.

In the original DDIF, these functions were handled by the same joint components, meaning wear from movement affected how easily parts could be swapped.

The DD-f3 addresses this with a spherical joint structure that moves freely in all directions while keeping the attachment mechanism entirely independent.

Joints can also be adjusted for stiffness using a tightening mechanism, allowing owners to customize the feel and perform their own maintenance over time.

The DD-f3 incorporates three patents, and Volks has noted that development and improvements are ongoing.

A collaboration model is a Dollfie Dream doll produced in partnership with an anime studio, game developer, or other creative property.

Rather than being an original Volks character, the doll is a faithful recreation of an existing character from the outfit and hair to the face-up and accessories.

Collaboration models are among the most sought-after releases in the Dollfie Dream lineup.

Volks uses a few different sales methods depending on the release, so it helps to know what to expect before a doll you want goes live.

Some releases use a lottery system where collectors submit an entry for a chance to purchase, and Volks selects winners at random.

This is Volks’ official method for managing demand on highly limited releases.

Other releases skip the lottery entirely and go straight to a pre-order or made-to-order window, while some are simply offered in a set quantity until they sell out.

That last scenario is what the Dollfie Dream community calls a clickwar.

It’s not an official Volks term; English-speaking fans coined it to describe the experience of competing against other collectors the moment a doll becomes available for purchase.

Volks announces the exact time when ordering opens, and from that moment, it’s a race to get your order through before stock is gone.

Most collaboration models are produced in limited quantities and are not restocked once sold out.

Some popular characters have received second or updated versions years later, but in general, missing a release means turning to the secondary market to find it.

New Dollfie Dream collaboration models typically retail between ¥70,000–¥120,000 (approximately $450–$800 USD depending on the character and size).

On the secondary market, prices vary widely; some releases sell near their original retail price, while highly sought-after or older releases can command significantly higher prices.
