Whether you’re just starting your doll sewing journey or looking to enhance your doll wardrobe, you’ve come to the right place.
Each month we’re sharing essential sewing tips & techniques to boost your confidence and elevate your doll sewing skills.
Let’s get to them!
1. Upcycle little bags into Project Bags. Place all of your project supplies & instructions in the bag with your fabric, thread & needles. Pull out to work on when you have idle hands and a few free minutes.
This terrific tip was recommended by Tee-na 😀
2. Read pattern instructions thoroughly before beginning a project
It’s a simple tip but reading the instructions beforehand is a great way to set yourself up for sewing success.
We learned this tip the hard way during the Dolly Sewing Crush adventure! 😅
3. Clean your sewing machine regularly to remove lint buildup
Having a clean sewing machine is such a satisfying feeling 🙌

4. Take breaks during long sewing sessions to prevent fatigue & frustrations
Nothing zaps the fun of dolly sewing like making simple mistakes because
A) You’re Sleepy and
B) Your Cranky
Your dolls will thank you when they receive a gift made with love vs annoyance 😀

Hi, Tatyana! Thanks so much for this article.
Any chance we could get an article on where to find good patterns for dolls? I love me a good pattern – especially ones with lots and lots of instructions.
Tee-na, you’re welcome.
That’s a good suggestion.
It sounds like it would be fun to explore the different patterns available for dolls.
It’s certainly something we will consider looking into.
Where you interested in sewing patterns with English text or Japanese text?
Oh, it would need to be English. Sadly, I know very little Japanese (but I’m learning!).
Hi Tee-na,
Thanks for getting back to us and letting us know about the text.
Also what size dolls would you like the patterns for?
Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions 🙂
All sizes would be appreciated, thank you for asking!
I have dolls that range from 15 cm to 180 cm, and everything in between.
Thanks, Tee-na for letting us know the size you’re interested in sewing for.
We’ve added the topic to our project list.
We appreciate the suggestion.
I’m learning to sew and realizing that I’ve used the WRONG TOOLS for the job.
1. Needles
(a) Come in different sizes. Use smaller needles (60/8-70/10) for fine fabric.
(b) Have different “point shapes.” Use Microtex (sharp, pointy) needles that won’t punch holes in fine fabric.
(c) Swap out after 8 hours’ sewing machine use.
2. Fabrics
(a) Weights: choose light weight (silk, polyester). Cotton quilting fabric is too thick/bulky.
(b) Interfacing/stabilizer: most sewing machines eat light fabrics (disappear into the sewing machine bowels in a snarled bunch). Use interfacing/stabilizer fabric, or coffee filters, tissue paper, or paper.
(c) People are squishy; dolls aren’t. Use fabric with a little stretchy (knits, fabric with a little spandex).
3. Directional sewing: if you’ve ever measured three times, sewn the pieces together, and ONE SIDE IS LONGER THAN THE OTHER WHY, sew directionally – from the neck out for shoulders; from the ankle to the waist for pants/skirts.
Hi Tee-na,
Awesome sewing recommendations 😀. The needle tip is a great one I’ll need to remember.
Thanks for taking the time to share your sewing knowledge with us.
